It has been suggested that this department be carve up into its own folio at Listing of April Fools jokes .[discuss ]

If this dissever may potentially be controversial, do not split until a consensus has been reached.
Reason: most of the apr fools jokes weren't really easter eggs

Many joke features and updates are teased on April 1. Some of these, such as stained glass, blocks of coal and horses, eventually fabricated their way into the official game.

The logo from the Mars Effect site.

In 2012, for April Fools', Notch created a hoax website for a new game entitled Mars Effect. [3]

"

After several weeks of trying to come up with a adept proper noun for the game, we finally decided not to learn from previous experiences and pick a proper name that's already kind of in apply past a huge existing franchise. Later playing around with names similar "Elight", "Wind Commander", and "Steve Online", nosotros finally settled on the very tricky name "Mars Effect".

Notch

This was a joke referencing a recent lawsuit past Bethesda, developers of The Elder Scrolls franchise, regarding the name of the Mojang game Scrolls.

"

The long-nosed villagers introduced in Minecraft beta 1.9 have become sentient. They have taken over our skin servers and content delivery networks (CDN), so unfortunately y'all will not exist able to change your skins until we set up the trouble. Nosotros are desperately trying our all-time to pull the plugs, but we should prepare ourselves to serve under our new villager overlords. Singularity may be upon us.

The Minecraft Team

This caused all players' current skin to be replaced with the various villager skins, and caused users to be unable to change their skins unless they modified the launcher .json file. Different career villager skins were used, including the then-unused dark-green robe of a nitwit villager.

In-game, villagers yet acted the same, merely they made unlike sounds. All noises were replaced with the audio effects of Chemical element Animation's "T.E.A.5.Southward.R.P" (The Chemical element Blitheness Villager Sounds Resources Pack). Mojang Studios besides added in-game villager music. The title screen music contains a parody of the Game of Thrones theme, due to the new series starting in early April and as well because of its beingness included in the original trailer for "T.E.A.V.Southward.R.P." Jeb as well claimed the villager got his Twitter account.[6]

Grumm released the villager skins on Reddit on April 1, 2014. There were seven variants, including a base peel.

An updated version of T.E.A.V.S.R.P., complete with the new music, was released past Element Animation on Apr 2, 2014.

Soon afterward, Element Animation released this video, and the skins and the sounds were reverted to the way they were before on April 2, 2014.

One of the Pocket Edition developers, Johan Bernhardsson, also shared an epitome of the player bouncing a basketball game in-game.[7]

2015 (Love and Hugs Update) [ ]

15w14a was released equally an April Fools' joke for version 1.10, when the next update was supposed to be 1.9. This "update" is called the Love and Hugs Update.[8] There was also a QR code written in the snow that generated in a superflat world that, when scanned, reads "Minecraft 1.9: The Combat Update". Swords were replaced with "hearts". The only earth proper noun available was "There can simply be one". Survival was chosen "Existence". Players were also unable to take damage from The Void.

The new textures are the original textures using 8-chip colour, leading to a desperate reduction in particular.[xi] The splash text for this day likewise shows any of the following:

  • Cleaner!
  • Simplified!
  • Perfected!amazing
  • Art directed! (by robots)
  • Auto learned textures!
  • Not blurry!
  • Not bubbly!
  • Not cartoony!
  • Photorealistic!
  • Mitt-painted!

The textures and the splashes were reverted to the style they were earlier on April two, 2018.[12] Yet, this update cannot be reactivated by setting the computer'southward engagement to Apr 1, 2018.

Besides, the but splash text shown is "OOoooOOOoooo! Chilling!"

Christmas [ ]

From December 24–26, chests, big chests, and trapped chests have their textures inverse to Christmas chests that resemble wrapped Christmas presents. This was added in Java Edition 1.4.6 for Christmas 2012. A texture file chosen "skis.png" was too added in Java Edition 1.iv.6 in the same folder as the Christmas chests, but information technology was added by Dinnerbone as a cherry-red herring. This was re-added for Christmas 2013,[16] along with a new "rain feature"—pigs riding chickens (this is not planned to be fully implemented). This too happened again in 2014 with a new splash reading, "Merry Ten-Mas!" and repeated in every Christmas since.

Guardian [ ]

Before the Texture Update, in the guardian and elderberry guardian textures, there was an unused area saying "jeb".

Armor stand up [ ]

In the texture for the armor stand, in an unused area in the bottom right, the give-and-take "Searge" can exist seen in a black box. This is presumably put at that place every bit a signature by Searge, the developer that implemented armor stands. In the bottom left, the word "Jappa" tin can be seen. This is probable another signature, this time from the texture artist, Jappa, who was in charge of the Texture Update.

Zombie pigman [ ]

Before the Texture Update, in an unused area for the zombie pigman texture, the words "THX XAPHOBIA" could be seen. This was written past Notch to give credit and thanks to the original creator of the texture, XaPhobia.[18] [19]

The first released texture of the creeper. The old foliage texture is overlaying a lighter version of the sus scrofa test texture with some green added. Areas for arms and long legs are seen, which were never used.

Textures hidden in transparency [ ]

Split-arrows.svg

It has been suggested that this section be dissever into its own page.[hash out ]

If this split may potentially be controversial, do not split until a consensus has been reached.
Reason: not actually an easter egg, more than like unintended leftovers; as there are many of these a split up page would make more sense

This section is missing information about other non-entity textures, as item textures seem to have a lot of unused translucent regions every bit stitched_items.png reveals.

Delight expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.

Some of the textures take pixels set to 0 opacity, which makes them appear transparent, when viewed with most image viewers. Notwithstanding, the color information of these pixels is however present, and can be retrieved by disabling the alpha channel. Well-nigh of these textures are probably leftovers from the creation of the texture, that the editing program didn't erase simply instead only set the opacity to 0. Textures listed here had their alpha channel disabled to reveal unused/subconscious pixels in the texture. Almost of the invisible pixels are from development of the texture or already existing texture has been used equally a template during evolution.

1.12.2 [ ]

Entities [ ]
Mobs [ ]

In that location are hidden pixels in these mobs. Equally of one.16.v, all except the ocelot still have them.

Alex [ ]

In version 1.viii, Alex was added to the game. Invisible pixels include Alex'south face up with glasses, a nice reference to Jeb, a Mojang developer, as well equally an unfinished arm texture like to Steve'due south used texture.

Silverfish [ ]

The silverfish was added in Beta 1.8, but the texture already exists in Beta one.7. Invisible pixels consist of a few different colored regions around the "pilus" textures.

Endermite [ ]

The snapshot texture of the endermite is seen underneath the new ane.

Bat [ ]

An unused face texture can be seen and the spider head texture is seen nether the fly. The spider texture was used as a template for the bat.

Ocelot and cat [ ]

This section is missing information virtually Bedrock Edition sectional grey cat texture.

Please aggrandize the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk folio.

The ocelot and the true cat variants were added in version i.2.1. The ocelot'due south hidden pixels incorporate an extra head texture, and all the cat textures feature an orange texture with black lines across it. Afterward the 1.14 update, the ocelot texture no longer contains hidden pixels. Most of the new cat textures are edited from the old ones, equally indicated by the similar hidden patterns. The textures too announced to have been cropped, since a large part of the former hidden texture is missing, with the exception of the scarlet cat texture, which appears to be unchanged.

Wolf [ ]

The wolf was added in Beta i.4. All four wolf texture files feature like hidden textures, which suggests, that they were created by modifying the same file. The nigh extreme is the collar texture, which originally contains only the neckband, but in that location is an unabridged wolf texture subconscious in transparency.

Blaze [ ]

The blaze has a hidden body texture.

Magma cube [ ]

A 2nd pair of eyes is visible.

Wither [ ]

The Wither'south Armor texture was based on creeper'due south charged armor. In the Wither textures, there is a copy of the main head nether the smaller one. The lite bluish color is visible without removing transparency.

Guardians [ ]

It seems that a template texture was used for designing the guardians.

Vex [ ]

The vex head is bigger and there seems to be leftover fly blueprint.

Zombies [ ]

The zombie textures take a Villager Zombie head hidden in his texture.

Capes [ ]

Main article: Cape

Some cape textures have a surreptitious on the underside where information technology is not very visible.

Languages [ ]

In that location are five joke languages bachelor at the linguistic communication menu: Pirate Speak, LOLCAT, Shakespearean English language, Anglish (puristic English language), and ɥsᴉlƃuƎ (ɯopᵷuᴉʞ pǝʇᴉu∩) (upside-down English).

Minecraft is also translated into tlhIngan Hol, the Klingon language from Star Trek; Quenya, one of the Elvish languages from Lord of the Rings; Lojban, a conlang made by the LLC (Logical Linguistic communication Group); and Esperanto, a conlang created past L.L. Zamenhof.

If a player types "excitedze" into the search bar in the recipe book, their language is automatically switched to Pirate Speak. "ExcitedZe" is the username of Maria Lemón, a sometime Mojang Studios staff member.[20]

Names [ ]

Naming mobs [ ]

Several mobs can be renamed by using a name tag to create an outcome.

Upside-downwardly mobs [ ]

An example of a pig and a creeper being named "Dinnerbone".

Nathan Adams Mojang avatar.png "

Annihilation with my name in Minecraft is upside down, including myself.

Dinnerbone

As of Java Edition 1.6, any mob (with the exception of the Ender Dragon, Squid and Glow Squid) named "Dinnerbone" or "Grumm" (case sensitive) through name tags, commands, or any other method, crusade information technology to render upside-downwards. The mob'south behavior does not change.

This also applies to players, allowing Dinnerbone and Grumm'southward avatars to exist rendered upside-down. This can exist toggled using the "Show greatcoat" button from "Peel Settings".[21] In Bedrock Edition, if the player names themselves Dinnerbone or Grumm, they are rendered upside-down. This works only if the thespian did not sign into Xbox Live.

Rainbow sheep [ ]

A sheep named "jeb_"

Naming a sheep "jeb_" using a proper noun tag or a renamed spawn egg causes it to continually cycle through all colors a sheep can be dyed. When sheared using shears, notwithstanding, the sheep drop wool of the original colour of the sheep rather than the color that currently appears on the sheep. In Bedrock Edition, if a sheep is named jeb_, and and so sheared, the leftover wool on its skin continues to cycle through all the colors.

"Toast the Bunny" [ ]

A rabbit named "Toast"

When Ryan Holtz was developing rabbits, user xyzen420 asked him to make a skin that would look similar his girlfriend'due south lost rabbit, Toast. Now, naming a rabbit with a name tag or a rabbit spawn egg called "Toast" causes the rabbit's pare pattern to look like Toast as a memorial. This also works if the actor attempts to proper noun The Killer Bunny; although while the rabbit'due south appearance uses the Toast peel, information technology tin can still attack as it would without the given name. When the histrion is killed by the renamed Killer Bunny, the expiry message says "<playername> was slain by Toast". "Toast" is re-textured to have black spots on its fur.

"Johnny" [ ]

If a vindicator is named "Johnny" or has its Johnny tag set to 1b, information technology attacks any nearby mobs except other illagers and ghasts. This references the moving picture The Shining. Zoglins also conduct in this manner.

Players [ ]

deadmau5's ears [ ]

Deadmau5 blue.png Deadmau5 RED.png

With the improver of the cape, Notch likewise added ears for the player deadmau5. The ears are "vanity items and are worn in addition to the role player's peel", with the texture independent within deadmau5's peel.

deadmau5 cannot disable his ears, equally a translucent role of the skin is automatically converted into a black color. His name tag is also programmed to return ten pixels college to be above the ears.

The ears are set up to prove up based on the username, rather than the UUID of the player, significant that if deadmau5 were to change his name, he would not keep his ears.

Notch'due south decease [ ]

When Notch died in-game, he dropped an boosted apple along with his inventory. At a certain time in-game, these were unobtainable.[22] Nonetheless, this was removed[23] [24]

Splashes [ ]

Never displayed splash [ ]

Within the "texts" folder, there is a text file named splashes.txt. The text file contains all the splashes that appear on the championship screen. One of them is "This message will never announced on the splash screen, isn't that weird?" As its text implies, the splash is never displayed. However in Legacy Console Edition information technology does brandish, only it has never been confirmed if it is a issues or an intentional feature.

missingno Splash [ ]

If ane were to delete the file splashes.txt without too deleting the META-INF folder, the splash text on the title screen appears as "missingno". This is a reference to the infamous glitch Pokémon MissingNo. found in the first generation of Pokémon games. This was subsequently changed to a zero-width no-break space, which is displayed with Minecraft 's Unicode font as a box with the letters "ZWNBSP" inside information technology.

The splash was added in Java Edition Alpha v1.0.12 and information technology's the only vanilla version with this splash by default since splashes.txt was not added yet.

Notch'south Birthday [ ]

Notch'south Birthday splash text in 1.7.ix. (Faithful 32x)

On June 1, Notch's Birthday, the simply splash displayed is "Happy Birthday, Notch!"

This splash was removed in Java Edition 1.viii.5, since Notch no longer works for Mojang.

Command blocks [ ]

Command blocks have diverse Easter eggs with messages being added to the previous output.

Searge [ ]

Running "Searge" as the control in the command block without a preceding "/" at present sets the previous output to "#itzlipofutzli". This Easter egg is case insensitive.

Searge says [ ]

If the command /assist is run via command block, it gives various letters prefixed with "Searge says: " as the previous output when activated. The post-obit messages exist:

  • "Yolo"
  • "/achievement accept achievement.understandCommands @p"
  • "Ask for assist on twitter"
  • "/deop @p"
  • "Scoreboard deleted, commands blocked"
  • "Contact helpdesk for help"

  • "Oh my god, information technology's full of stats"
  • "/impale @p[proper name=!Searge]"
  • "Accept yous tried turning information technology off and on again?"
  • "Sorry, no assistance today".

This no longer works in ane.13 or in a higher place (MC-124295); instead the /help command now runs normally, just the previous output gives merely the terminal line ("/xp -> experience") due to in that location existence space for just one line.

Java Edition launcher [ ]

Some launcher Easter eggs. The shrugging emoticon has been clicked, causing it to turn white. A witch has as well appeared after the role player hovered over the play push.

Before the release of the Coffee Edition launcher version ii.1.497x, the launcher contained multiple Easter eggs. If the role player hovered their cursor over the "Play" button for a few seconds, a random mob would appear in the bottom correct corner of the launcher. In the top left corner of the launcher, the actor could see a translucent creeper face up. In that location was almost a 111 chance of the creeper face being replaced with a shrugging emoticon, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. When the thespian clicked on either of these, they turned solid white. Clicking them again would return them to their translucent state. In addition, if the thespian pressed ctrl+b, the feel orb pickup audio plays. These can no longer work because the launcher has since been updated.
